At least 24 dead, unknown number of survivors.
The boat sank in October 1941 in the Baltic Sea in a collision. She was raised and returned to service in April 1942.

Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-579 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
